In every relationship, there's a moment that you're presented with a choice between being popular and having your partner's back. Oftentimes, the popular choice seems appealing; after decades of single life, people pleasing, or whatever other baggage has followed you into your adult life, sticking to the status quo and going along with the punches seems simpler. But when it comes down to the dignity of your partner over years of classical conditioning, you're faced with a moment of pristine clarity.
Early in my husband and my relationship, my family was giving him a hard time about wearing a scarf. He's European and I'm American, so my corn-fed, blue-collar family didn't understand how a straight man could ever wear a scarf. No offense, but have you ever worn a scarf? They're warm, they're comfy, and they're stylish—grow up. But as my husband was getting torn apart by the wolves (my family), I had the choice to either back him up or cower into the familiar folds of my ancestry…
Like the guy in this next story, I wouldn't stand for anybody going up against my partner—and will never second guess the choice again.
